Description
The Pavilion at Manderston House, designed by John Kinross around 1895, features a pair of sunken terraces located to the east of the house. The western terrace includes a croquet lawn with a raised viewing area, stone steps, and outbuildings, while the eastern terrace contains a tennis court. The ashlar sandstone steps are arranged in an L-plan cascade, highlighted by ball-finialled dies and accompanied by a balustrade.
The Tudor Pavilion is a garden shed constructed from variegated rubble with ashlar dressings, showcasing Elizabethan details. It has windows with moulded surrounds and leaded diamond-pane glazing. The entrance features a segmental-arched doorway with a blank panel above, flanked by a bipartite window on the right and a low ogee-arched opening on the left. A tripartite window is located on the return to the left.
The Garden House, also known as the Dovecot, is a small, square building made of rake-jointed rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, set into a low, flat-coped wall. It has decorative lead diamond-pane glazing in a small bipartite window with a moulded surround, a cavetto cornice, and a sawtooth pyramidal roof that includes three flight-hole openings and an alighting ledge, topped with a ball finial. A door on the return to the right features chamfered arrises and is accessed through a small enclosed area with two ball finial-flanked dies. A short run of ashlar balustrade is located to the left, with a central die.
The site is enclosed by high rubble walls with battered, sawtooth coping.
