Description

The former granary and byre at Riccarton Mill dates back to the 18th century and is arranged in an L-plan as part of a former meal mill complex. The structure features a split-level granary and byre, along with detached kiln buildings. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings and in-and-out quoins.

The granary and byre, dated 1770, is a two-storey rectangular building with a gabled roof. It has a metal forestair leading to a first-floor doorway on the south elevation. The ground floor includes a timber door to the byre, which has a lintel stone inscribed with the date 1770. There are double-leaf timber doors on the north elevation and a blocked opening on the first floor. Part of the timber floor from the upper level is still intact. Adjoining to the west is another single-storey gabled building that features narrow slitted openings on its west gable.

The kiln has a two-leaf timber door on the west side with a timber lintel and a window above it. The north elevation includes a round-arched draw-hole at ground level, and the interior walls are battered. The kiln has a piended roof.

The roofs are covered with graded grey slate, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. Additionally, there is evidence of a lade system, which survives as an earthwork extending 200 meters south to the Liddel Water.
