Stable, Springhill, Birgham

Gardener's Cottage, located in Springhill, Birgham, dates from the earlier to mid 19th century and features later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey, U-shaped building that includes a former gardener's cottage in the northeast wing, which has a gabled addition and a lean-to porch at the rear. The northwest and southwest wings were originally used for stabling and groom's accommodation. The exterior is constructed from harl-pointed red sandstone rubble with tooled red sandstone dressings, including tooled quoins and tooled long and short surrounds to the openings.

The northeast range, or cottage, has a four-bay southwest elevation featuring a timber-mullioned bipartite window offset to the right of center, a small single window to the left, and single windows in the remaining bays on the outer left. The southeast elevation of the original block has a boarded timber door offset to the left of center, with a timber door in the lean-to porch to the right. There is a modern window centered in the single-storey wing to the outer right.

The northwest range has a six-bay southeast elevation with boarded timber doors featuring letterbox fanlights in the central bay and the two bays to the right. There are single windows in two bays offset to the left of center, and a boarded gabled dormer is set between. A boarded timber door with a letterbox fanlight is located in the outer left bay. The northwest rear elevation was not visible in 1998.

The southwest range has a boarded timber stable door in the outer right bay, with the remainder of the elevation being blind. The southeast elevation features a centrally located arched carriage opening with two-leaf boarded timber doors and a pointed-arched pigeon hole with a sandstone ledge above. To the left, there are two-leaf boarded timber garage doors in a single-storey addition. The southwest rear elevation was also not visible in 1998.

The building predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with some modern windows and a small skylight. The roofs are covered with grey slate, have coped skews, and include replacement rainwater goods. There are brick ridge and apex stacks with various cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998. In front of the cottage, there is a cobbled courtyard with a simple geometric pattern, sloping away from a central drain.
