Description

Bartlehill is a farmhouse likely dating to the later 18th century, with a significant addition to the front in the later 19th century, along with subsequent additions and alterations. The house is two storeys high and originally three bays wide to the front, with a recessed central section and single-storey pavilions flanking the original house at the rear, the right-hand pavilion being taller.

The front facade is constructed of squared and snecked, tooled cream sandstone with cream ashlar dressings, some of which are droved. The sides and rear are of harl-pointed rubble sandstone, with a rendered section on the southwest elevation. Narrow quoin strips and droved quoins define the corners, and droved surrounds frame the openings. Ashlar margins feature around the entrance wing, and sandstone mullions are present. Projecting stone cills are found throughout.

The southeast elevation (the main entrance front) features a recessed central bay with steps leading to a timber panelled front door, above which is a two-pane fanlight and narrow sidelights. A single window sits above the door at the first floor level. Piended sections extend to the left and right, each with a corniced tripartite window projecting at ground level and narrow sidelights; single windows are aligned at the first floor. Single-storey, single-bay pavilions are recessed to the outer left and right.

The southwest elevation shows an entrance wing with single windows at both floors, offset to the right of centre. A recessed two-bay section, possibly the original house, is positioned to the left, with a single-storey pavilion adjoined at ground level, and single windows in both bays above.

The northwest elevation (the rear) displays an original house with a stained glass stair window offset to the left of centre, and a small window beneath. Bipartite windows are at ground level in the flanking bays, with a single window at the first floor in the bay to the left and a small window offset to the right. A part-glazed timber door is situated in the single-storey pavilion recessed to the outer right. A pavilion to the outer left features a projecting flat-roofed porch to the right and a mono-pitched ancillary structure to the left.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, with some plate glass at the rear. The roofs are purple-grey slate, pitched and piended, with stone-coped skews in some areas. Iron rainwater goods are present. Corniced wallhead stacks are on the southwest entrance range (brick) and northeast elevation (sandstone), while a brick apex stack is at the rear. Various circular cans are visible. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
