Description
Dub Cottage in Birgham is a single-storey, three-bay gabled cottage dating from the later part of the 19th century, with some later additions and alterations. It features a projecting porch and a columned verandah that wraps around the south corner, along with a lean-to addition that is recessed to the left. The exterior is constructed from cream sandstone rubble with droved sandstone dressings. The eaves are overhanging and bracketed with timber, and the bargeboards are also timber. The cottage has droved quoins and droved long and short surrounds to its openings, with sandstone mullions and narrow sidelights in the tripartite windows, and projecting cills throughout.
On the northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a single window in the gabled porch at the center, with a boarded timber door to the right. Tripartite windows are found in the bays to the left and right, and the lean-to addition is recessed to the outer left.
The southwest side elevation features a single window at ground level to the left, with a timber door in the bay recessed to the right and an iron-columned verandah at the front.
The southeast rear elevation is three bays wide, with a single window in the gabled bay recessed at the center. A tripartite window is located in a larger, gabled bay that is advanced to the outer right, while another gabled bay is advanced to the outer left, featuring a tripartite window at the center. The lean-to addition is situated to the right, alongside the iron-columned verandah at the front.
The northeast side elevation shows the main house with a lean-to addition to the right and a single window to the left. The gabled wing to the left is a blind elevation.
The windows predominantly feature 9-pane upper and 4-pane lower glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate, with a part-glazed slate roof on the verandah. Iron rainwater goods are present, along with corniced brick ridge and apex stacks topped with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
