Description
Whitehaugh is a late 18th century farmhouse originally built for Dr James Hay of Haystoun. It is a two-storey farmhouse, later with an attic, arranged in a T-plan with single-storey, single-bay wings projecting from the flanks. A modern lean-to sun lounge has been added to the rear. To the south of the farmhouse is a U-plan courtyard range, with an L-plan range attached to its rear. The building is constructed of whitewashed whin rubble with black-painted rusticated quoins and dressings.
The principal (south) elevation features a single-storey wing to the left, incorporating a boarded entrance door. The main house has a small window to the ground floor on both the left and centre-right sides, and a bipartite window to the right. Above, regularly placed windows are seen in the outer bays; two later flat-roofed attic dormers have slated cheeks. A blind single-storey wing is to the right.
The western elevation has a blind wall of the single-storey wing adjoining the ground floor of the main house, and is blind to the first floor, featuring a central wallhead stack.
The rear (north) elevation displays a shallow T-plan, with an advanced bay in the centre of the main house, containing windows on both floors. The remaining bays are regularly placed. A much later single-storey, lean-to sun lounge sits in the re-entrant angle on the right, featuring a tripartite window. To the right return is a tripartite window and a timber entrance door filling the elevation. Single-storey, single-bay wings project from the flanks of the main house, and a small farm outbuilding with a window adjoins the left return of the left wing.
The eastern elevation mirrors the western, with a blind wall of the single-storey wing adjoining the ground floor of the main house and a blind first floor to the main house with a central wallhead stack.
Most windows are timber sash and case with later plate glass, although some have single hinged panes in the attic. Rear wings have replacement glazing, with the sun lounge’s glazing plan contemporary with the structure. The courtyard range incorporates some 12 and 6-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with piended blue-grey slate. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are present, along with whitewashed stone wallhead stacks featuring black-painted rusticated quoins and copes, topped with plain cans.
The interior has been modernised and is in residential use, dating to 2002.
The courtyard range is essentially U-plan, with an L-plan addition to the rear. The main, one-and-a-half storey, seven-bay west range has a door with a window to the right, a small window to the right of the upper storey, a central door with flanking windows, and a semi-glazed hayloft breaking the eaves with small windows on each flank. To the right are paired cart pends with two-leaf timber doors, and a single window above each pend in the upper storey. The south and east ranges are similarly detailed.
