Description

The Longhouse is a single-storey house located in the centre of Ancrum village. It is a converted former three-bay dwelling and two-bay byre, likely dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The building originally stood, and probably had a thatched roof.

The building is constructed with thick walls of random rubble, pointed with clay mortar, and sits on a base of boulders. It is orientated north to south, with the front gable facing The Green. The front (south) gable has a pair of early 19th-century windows at ground floor level, and a small attic window positioned off-centre to the left, which has been patched with brick. The southern end of the building, possibly heightened in the late 19th century, has a door in the centre of the east elevation, flanked to the right by an enlarged 19th-century window and to the left by an earlier, blocked-up opening, mirrored by a similar window on the west elevation. The north (rear) gable is wider than the south gable and has two small, asymmetrically placed window openings.

The window openings were widened in the early 19th century and feature reused red and cream ashlar blocks with chamfered lintels that appear to date from the early to mid-18th century. There are roughly-squared, cream sandstone dressings to the original openings, with curved and chamfered details at the southeast angle. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case windows with 8-pane glazing. The roof is steep-pitched and covered in slates. Internally, there were flagstone floors at the time of listing in 1991.

The building was converted in the late 1990s into a single dwellinghouse from a building formerly used as a store and garage related to a former smithy. Previously known as Sunnyside Cottage, that name now applies to a neighbouring unlisted property.
