Description
This is an 1812 building, originally a miller's house at Scots Mill, Kailzie, constructed for Robert Nutter Campbell. It has been altered in the mid and late 20th century. The structure comprises a one-and-a-half-storey, three-bay rectangular main house, with later single-storey, single-bay wings attached, one connecting to a one-and-a-half-storey, L-plan outbuilding—now adapted to provide accommodation—all built into a hillside.
The exterior is constructed of local random whinstone rubble with red sandstone dressings and hoodmoulds. Ashlar facings and dressings are present, with a harled return to the east wing. The main house features bracketed swept eaves and overhanging roofs to gabletted dormers and the entrance bay.
The north (principal) elevation presents the main one-and-a-half-storey, three-bay house to the left. A slightly advanced central entrance gable features a full-height pointed arch, incorporating a two-leaf timber entrance door with studded arched panels and an arched tracery fanlight, set within a plain whinstone margin surround with a bracketed canopy. Above the door, a pointed arch window with a projecting sill is flanked by hoodmoulded square windows aligning with attic gabletted dormers containing arched windows. To the left, a slightly recessed, single-storey, single-bay piended wing adjoins the main house. To the right, a single-storey, flat-roofed extension links to the gable of the one-and-a-half-storey outbuilding, displaying similarly styled paired square windows to the ground floor, and a single window to the gablehead.
The east elevation is largely blind, with a later single-storey, piend-roofed wing off-centre to the right.
The west elevation reveals a blind gable wall of the main house, with a single-storey wing adjoining at ground floor, forming a link to the one-and-a-half-storey L-plan outbuilding. This outbuilding features a pair of round-arched windows to the left and an advanced gable to the right, inset into the hillside. A much later timber and glazed gablehead contains a double door leading to a decked area.
The square windows on the ground floor of the main house contain bipartite arch-headed lights with conventional four-pane glazing in lower timber sashes and five-pane Y-tracery in the upper sashes. Arched, multi-paned Y-tracery lights (hinged at the bottom and opening inward) are found in the dormers and the arched entrance bay. The main house is capped by a pitched slate roof with swept eaves supported on a bracketed eaves course. Overhanging eaves have exposed rafters and purlins to the dormer windows. The east wing has a piended slate roof, and the outbuilding a pitched slate roof with ridgeline ventilators, all with later roll ridging, and skews on the east elevation of the main house. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are in place, with concealed gutters on the main elevation. Tall, diamond-set ashlar stalks stand on rectangular plinths at the gableheads of the main house, each featuring a projecting neck cope and tall plain cans (some with later ventilators).
The interior was not inspected in 2002.
