Description
Scots Mill, located in Kailzie, was built in 1802 for Robert Nutter Campbell. This former corn mill is a two-storey and attic structure with an irregular L-shaped layout, featuring a pyramidal-roofed kiln in the northern arm and a former granary to the west. The building is constructed from random local whinstone rubble, accented with whinstone dressings, and includes later openings with some sandstone ashlar dressings. The roof is skew gabled with plain skews and putts.
On the south elevation, there is a three-bay façade with a central timber boarded entrance door set within a whinstone surround, topped by a segmental lintel made of whinstone voussoirs. The flanking windows are segmental-headed with similar dressings, and there is an inscribed panel reading "RNC 1802 SM." A piended hayloft entrance interrupts the eaves between the door and the right window, featuring a boarded timber section below and a window above.
The west elevation features a square-plan kiln on the left and an advanced granary wing on the right, both of which have been newly fenestrated. The kiln has new central openings on each level. The advanced kiln includes a central entrance at the lower loft, a central serliana style tripartite window (without columns) at the middle loft, and a central segmental-headed window in the attic.
On the north elevation, the advanced kiln on the left has new fenestration, while the return of the granary to the right also features new openings. The east elevation shows the granary on the left with an entrance at a lower level accessed by a flight of steps, a central serliana style tripartite window at the middle loft, and a central segmental-headed attic window in the gable. To the right is a sparsely fenestrated, near-blind kiln.
The windows throughout the building feature 8 and 12-pane glazing with segmental-headed upper sashes in timber sash and case frames, alongside a large multi-pane fixed arch-headed window on the west gable. Later openings have traditional style glazing. The roof is pitched and covered with slate, including the slated pyramidal-roofed kiln, and features replacement ridging and flashing, as well as a row of roofline ventilators in the granary. The rainwater goods are painted cast iron.
Inside, the mill has been converted into modern residential accommodation in the late 20th century, but the original room layout is still visible, along with later connecting openings and a timber staircase.
