Description
The Menteith Mausoleum, designed by Peddie & Kinnear in 1864, is a square-plan, symmetrical mausoleum built in a Neo-Byzantine style. It features a domed roof and is situated on steeply sloping ground, with its entrance located in an exposed basement to the north. The exterior is constructed of polished yellow ashlar sandstone, with coursed bull-faced sandstone used for the basement. Each elevation has a three-step base and a dentilled eaves cornice that extends over the semi-circular pediments.
The basement entrance includes a two-leaf studded and panelled timber door set within a deep ashlar architrave, topped by an inscribed panel. Curved abutments on either side of the basement wall end in plinths that support recumbent lions, with one lion awake on the left and the other asleep on the right. The north pediment displays the Douglas coat of arms, and the dome is topped with a cross finial and features glazed stars.
Inside, the mausoleum contains an ashlar-lined chamber that houses a stone coffin flanked by angels.
