Description
Winfield Farmhouse is an earlier to mid 19th century farmhouse, with later additions and alterations. It is a plain classical style, two-storey, L-shaped building with a symmetrical three-bay entrance front, and single and two-storey additions to the rear. The front is constructed of coursed and tooled cream sandstone with polished sandstone dressings, while the sides and rear are of harl-pointed red rubble sandstone. The building has a raised base course and a moulded eaves course, with narrow strip quoins. The windows have droved long and short surrounds with raised margins and projecting cills. A rectangular-plan, single-storey, five-bay outbuilding is located to the northeast.
The south elevation (entrance front) features a recessed timber panelled door centred at ground level, with a latticed fanlight and a surrounding doorpiece of flanking pilasters, a plain frieze, a cornice, and a block pediment. A single window is positioned above the door at the first floor. Single windows are located at both floors in the outer left and right bays.
The west elevation has a two-bay wing to the right, with single windows at both floors in the outer right bay. A large, sweeping, glazed lean-to conservatory on a brick plinth obscures the bay to the left. To the left, a two-bay wing is recessed, and a single-storey wing extends to the outer left.
The east elevation displays a projecting wing to the left, with a single window at ground level in the outer left bay. A lean-to addition is recessed to the right, with a single window at ground level, aligned with the first-floor window above. An advanced two-storey wing has a single window centred at ground level and two single windows at the first floor. A part-glazed timber door is located at ground level in a recessed single-storey addition, with a single window in the outer right bay.
The windows are timber sash and case windows with 8 and 12 panes of glazing. The building has grey slate piended and pitched roofs, with raised stone skews to a single-storey wing. Some cast-iron rainwater goods are present. Splayed wallhead stacks have been rebuilt in brick, topped with octagonal cans. The interior was not inspected in 1997.
The outbuilding is constructed of random rubble sandstone with rubble quoins and long and short droved rubble dressings. The south elevation features a single opening at ground level, offset to the right of centre, flanking single windows, a two-leaf boarded timber garage door to the outer left, and a single boarded timber door to the outer right. Later lean-to additions are present to the outer right and left, and it has a grey slate piended roof. The interior was not inspected in 1997.
Low, coped, splayed walls flank the entrance. The entrance walls feature stop-chamfered square-plan inner (rendered) and outer (sandstone) piers, with pyramidal caps and replacement cast-iron vehicular access gates.
