Description

Sunwick Farmhouse is a late 18th-century farmhouse with subsequent additions and alterations. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular building, accompanied by 2-storey, 2-bay, piend-roofed flanking pavilions which create a near “U” shaped layout. There is a further lean-to addition at the rear and a mono-pitched addition to one side.

The main farmhouse is constructed of red brick, with the pavilions featuring alternating header and three-row stretcher courses. Render dressings are present. A base course is visible in places, and a brick string course divides the floors on the front and sides, consisting of a header course sandwiched between stretcher courses. There is also an eaves course. Projecting cills are found at the rear and east side. A rubble mono-pitched addition is located on one side. Gableheads incorporate angled brick sections at the skews, displaying a Dutch architectural influence.

The south (entrance) elevation features a central, flush-panelled timber door with steps leading up to it, offset to the left. A plate glass fanlight is above the door. Single windows occupy the remaining bays on the ground floor, with matching single windows above. The left pavilion is recessed and features painted imitation windows in both bays on each floor. The right pavilion is also recessed, with a multi-pane door to the left and a single window to the right on the ground floor, and aligned single windows above. A single-storey, mono-pitched addition is attached to the outer right, featuring a boarded timber door.

The west side elevation showcases a 3-bay pavilion with blind windows at both floors, centered. Single windows are placed at both floor levels to the left and right, with a small window in the lean-to addition to the left. The main farmhouse is offset to the right, and an attic light is centred in the gablehead.

The north (rear) elevation displays a central round-arched stair window, with a squat window directly above. A small window is positioned within the former doorway on the ground floor to the left, and single windows are present on both floors in the bays to the left and right. The projecting, piend-roofed pavilion on the outer right is adjoined to a boarded window in the lean-to addition in front. A projecting piend-roofed pavilion on the left features a single window centered on the first floor. A recessed mono-pitched addition is on the outer left, with a single window offset to the left of center.

The east side elevation presents a 2-bay pavilion with a segmental-arched window, previously a doorway, centered at ground level. A single window is to the right at ground level, and single windows flank the centre on the first floor. A mono-pitched, single-storey addition projects to the left. The main farmhouse is offset to the left behind, with single windows at both floors to the outer left, and an attic light centred in the gablehead.

The farmhouse predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with some 4-pane timber sash and case windows on the sides. Modern glazing is present on the front, sides, and rear. The main block has a steeply-pitched grey slate roof, while the pavilions have grey slate roofs. Red tile ridging is consistent throughout, with a pantiled lean-to addition at the rear. Brick-built apex stacks are situated on the east and west sides, topped with circular terracotta cans. Some iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not inspected in 1999.

A rubble boundary wall partially encloses the site to the front.
