Description

Rose Cottage, a cottage dating to the early 19th century, is part of a group of buildings that also includes a later gate lodge designed by George Henderson in 1896, and a coach house and stable block also dating to 1896. These buildings are linked and form an L-shaped structure on a steep slope, with an entrance gateway located to the east.

Rose Cottage is a single-story, three-bay rectangular cottage that extends into the former coach house to the west. The central bay slightly projects, featuring a blocking course above with a blind panel doorpiece, which has been altered to a window. A later 20th-century piended entrance porch is on the north side. The cottage is constructed of random rubble with raised sandstone margins and strip quoins, and features an ashlar base course and eaves band course. It has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a low-pitched piended slate roof, corniced ashlar stacks with tall octagonal clay cans, 20th-century roof lights, and a 15-pane glazed door to the south.

The 1896 gate lodge is a single-story square building with a hexagonal room to the west. It’s made of coursed bull-faced sandstone with smooth rybats, angled base and cills. It has timber bracketed eaves, timber sash and case windows and a timber boarded door, with pitched slate roofs and corniced wallhead stacks with octagonal cans.

The coach house, built in 1896, connects the gate lodge and Rose Cottage. It features a low double-pitched slate roof with overhanging timber bracketed eaves, an advanced gabled bay to the south, high-level small squared windows, and a stepped string course. A four-centred pointed open archway with staged side buttresses provides access to a roofed courtyard and the entrance to Rose Cottage. A stepped parapet wall to the left includes a circular tower housing a toilet. An 1895 wrought iron corona weathervane is present. A lower, crenellated walled storage area is to the north, and triangular eaves ventilators are present on the north side. Inside the courtyard, large timber sliding partition doors on cast-iron runners are retained. A margined timber boarded doorpiece with timber and cast-iron stable stall divider is in the northwest room.

The entrance gateway consists of curved, stepped, and corniced side walls with depressed pointed arched openings. The gateway is constructed from coursed bullfaced sandstone with a base course, string course, conical gatepier caps, and a coped enclosing wall with arched gate to the side.
