Description

Sawmill Cottage at Rachan Mill Farm dates from around 1845 and has seen later additions and alterations. It features an asymmetrical, near Z-plan layout consisting of three cottages: a single-storey, three-bay gabled cottage on the left known as 'Millside'; a single-storey, two-bay cottage in the center called 'Old Mill Cottage'; and another single-storey, three-bay cottage on the right named 'Sawmill Cottage'.

The Millside cottage has a front made of squared and snecked whinstone, with some rake-jointed sections, and rubble at the rear. It is accented with droved cream sandstone quoins and long and short surrounds around its openings. Old Mill Cottage is rendered and features tabbed red sandstone margins. Sawmill Cottage has a front of squared and snecked whinstone, similar to Millside, with rubble at the rear and droved red sandstone quoins and surrounds.

On the entrance elevation of Millside, there is a part-glazed boarded timber door in the center, accompanied by a three-pane fanlight above. To the right, there is a bipartite window, and above, a gabled dormer is aligned. The projecting gabled bay to the left has a bipartite window centered at the ground and a single window in the gablehead. Old Mill Cottage features a timber panelled door to the outer left and a single window in the next bay to the right. Sawmill Cottage has a timber panelled door at the center with single windows flanking it at ground level, and piended bipartite dormers above.

On the rear elevation of Millside, there is a part-glazed boarded timber door offset to the right of center, with a bipartite window to the right and single windows in two bays to the left. There is also a lean-to addition on the outer left. Old Mill Cottage has an L-plan layout with a brick-built, engaged polygonal porch in the re-entrant angle and various openings. Sawmill Cottage has a window offset to the right of center.
