Description

14 Lower Burnmouth in Burnmouth is a row of seven two-storey houses with basements, designed by Rowand Anderson, Kininmonth & Paul in 1948, with later additions and alterations. This rectangular seafront terrace features basement entrances at the front, which were formerly used as fishermen's stores, and projecting porches at the rear. The exterior is finished in painted harl with sandstone ashlar dressings. The basement openings have painted, stop-chamfered surrounds, and there is a continuous band course at the ground level on the front and sides, along with continuous eaves courses. The properties are divided by giant order ashlar pilasters at the front and rear, with quoin strips at the outer angles. Each house has cantilevered concrete balconies with thin iron railings at the front.

On the northeast (entrance) elevation, each property features a full-width recessed panel at the basement with a large boarded timber door and a glazed sidelight offset to the right of center. There is a projecting balcony at the ground floor accessed via a patio door, which has been partially replaced, and a bipartite window in the bay to the left. The first floor has a tripartite window in the outer right bay and a bipartite window to the left.

The southwest (rear) elevation has a flat-roofed, weather-boarded porch set at an angle off-center to the right, featuring a large window at the front and a door in the return to the left, with various replacement doors and an extended porch with a new door inserted at No 20. There is a bipartite window in the bay to the left at ground level and a tripartite window aligned at the first floor.

The houses predominantly have casement windows, some of which are fixed with hoppers, along with some modern windows. The roof is tiled, with regularly spaced coped ridge stacks and various circular flues.

The interiors, as seen in 2009, have simple plan forms that are largely intact, with a later internal connection between No 19 and No 20. The rear wall of the basement contains a fragment of an earlier building.
