Description

1 Kimmerghame Haugh is a pair of cottages from the early 19th century, with later alterations and additions. The cottages are single storey with an attic and consist of five bays in total, featuring enlarged single storey lean-to additions at the rear of each. The exterior is constructed from whinstone and sandstone harl-pointed rubble, with broadly-droved ashlar dressings. The rear of No 1 has pebble-dash, while No 2 has a painted rubble addition with a modern harled enlargement. The building features chamfered arrises.

On the south elevation, the bays are arranged with three for No 1 and two for No 2. There is a strip panelled door at the center of the three-bay group, which is sheltered by a gabled timber porch with a boarded gablehead. Each flanking bay has a timber-mullioned bipartite window. The door and porch are also present in the left bay of the two-bay group, with a window similar to No 1 in the right bay.

The north elevation has been significantly altered, with an enlarged window in the left bay of No 1, and a modern door and window in the right bay. Each bay of No 2 has a window. The south elevation features 8-pane timber sash and case windows, while the rear has a variety of window styles. The roof is slate with ashlar coped skews and includes two flue stacks that are also ashlar coped. There are platformed bipartite dormer windows on the south side, with one in the flanking bay of No 1 and one on each side of the center at No 2. A modern skylight is present in the addition to No 1, along with a 2-pane 19th century skylight at the rear of both cottages.

Inside, No 2 retains original plain chimneypieces, each with a cast-iron surround.

There are also ancillary buildings, possibly a former piggery or coal shed and outside privy, located to the north. These are built from whinstone and sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings and have coped wallheads. Each section has a boarded door.
