Green Farm Steading, Broughton, East Range, Biggar

Green Farm Steading is an early 19th century former steading that has undergone some alterations in the 20th century to create residential accommodation in its northern half. The building features a single-storey U-shaped design, with a slightly lower small return at the southeast corner and a small garage section with a piended roof attached to the south range. The L-shaped section of the north and east ranges has been converted for residential use, and the courtyard-facing elevations have large windows likely created by infilling former doorways. Some openings on the outer east-facing elevation are from later periods. The southern range remains a store, featuring a large opening to the courtyard with a timber boarded sliding door on metal runners. The outer south and west elevations are primarily solid stone, with a single small window and door on the south elevation.

The building is constructed from painted rubble stonework, with some brick and render from later alterations and openings. The roofs are slated, with the residential section having replacement slates, while the east and south pitches of the southern range have small graduated slates that may date back to the original construction. Most windows are later 20th century timber frames, with a small timber 4-pane window in the south elevation.

The interior was partially observed in 2016. The northern section has later 20th century partitions and details reflecting its conversion to a dwelling. The southern part of the steading is open plan, featuring a plain open timber truss roof with sarking boards and exposed rubble walls. The interiors of the east parts of the south wing, including the small store and attached garage, were not seen during the 2016 visit.
