Description

The Mound is a later 19th-century asymmetrical villa located at 12 Main Road, Castle Head, Paisley. It is two storeys tall with a basement and attic, and features a three-storey east wing that was added in 1890 by architect John Hutchinson. The exterior is constructed of snecked stugged ashlar with polished dressings.

The villa has a flat-roofed porch at the northwest re-entrant angle, supported by two colonnettes with foliate capitals and a pierced balustrade. Above the round-arched doorway is a carved head. The west elevation includes a gabled bay with a bowed oriel window on the first floor. The north elevation features a right bay that is canted and gabled, while the three-storey left bay is advanced and gabled, with chamfered corners at the ground floor that are corbelled to a square above. The middle of the east elevation has an advanced gabled bay. The south elevation has an advanced right bay with three-storey bow windows.

There is a staircase window with two horseshoe arches and a modern doorway with a fore stair below. A corbelled projecting window is located at the angle of the west and south sides. The villa displays a variety of sash and multi-light windows set in chamfered reveals, and features wide eaves supported by paired wooden brackets. The slate roof has corniced stacks and a gabled dormer on the south side, with a segmentally pedimented dormer on the west.

Inside, the villa has been altered but still retains fine stucco work in the hall, along with a panelled drawing room that includes a fireplace and moulded ceilings.
