Description
This is a two-storey, five-bay primary school building constructed in 1912, designed by William Kerr of John Melvin and Son, Alloa, and built in a Classical style. The building is set back from the street within its playground. It is built of red sandstone ashlar with end stacks.
The front of the building features a central belcote, a tower-like structure projecting from the roof. The belcote has a square section, open at the arched bell stage, with timber framing including pilasters and detached angle columns. It has a deep cornice with an octagonal timber and leaded dome topped with finials at the angles. The main roof is slate-covered.
The principal (main) elevation has a boys' entrance on the right and a girls' entrance on the left, both within moulded doorcases that feature simple cornices. Directly above each entrance are elaborately carved Renaissance-style window architraves. The frieze is plain, and the main cornice is dentilled. The upper windows are 4-pane sash and case windows, while the ground floor windows are 16-pane sashes.
A single-storey hall extends to the rear of the building and features large 12-pane sash and case windows arranged in groups of three and four panes. The interior was not inspected.
Boundary walls line the street, with simple cast-iron railings supported by a pair of square gatepiers constructed of grey ashlar and topped with simple, convex pyramid caps.
