Description
Burton's, located at 6 and 8 High Street, is a three-storey Art Deco classical shop building designed by Henry Wilson and constructed between 1929 and 1930. It occupies a prominent corner site and features a roughly five-bay by three-bay layout. The building is notable for its paired giant Ionic pilasters on the first and second floors, a curved corner treatment, and a stepped parapet.
The structure is steel-framed and clad in white faience on the first and second floors, while the ground floor on the Dyer's Wynd elevation is finished in limestone or concrete. The ground-level shopfronts have been altered and feature mid- to late 20th century glazed designs, with bays separated by simple pilasters. A deep fascia is framed by a corniced architrave, which also serves as the cill course for the first floor.
The first and second floors are distinguished by stylised paired giant Ionic pilasters, with metal-framed glazing in between and a wider bay at the corner. Reeded cast-iron panels with central rosettes separate the first and second floors, topped by an entablature that includes a key-pattern cornice and an anthemion band. The stepped parapet is adorned with a blind panel inscribed "Burton's" at the centre and features an anthemion finial above. The outer bays are very plain. Additionally, there is a service door on the rear elevation (Dyer's Wynd) with a moulded, shouldered architrave that encompasses a panel inscribed "BURTON BUILDINGS." The interior has been reconstructed.
