Description
Thorscrag is a two-storey and attic, three-bay L-plan villa built between 1924 and 1926 by W D McLennan. It is situated on a prominent hilltop site and features distinctive Tudorised Art Deco details, including oversized cantilevered coping on the stacks. The building is constructed of reinforced concrete that resembles red sandstone.
The northwest (entrance) elevation has broad steps flanked by dwarf walls leading to a slightly recessed central bay. This bay features a stylised Gibbsean doorcase with a timber door and small bipartite windows on either side. Above, there is a V-plan bay with a window at the first floor, situated below the eaves overhang, and two ridge stacks. To the left, there is a gabled bay with a tripartite window. The building has been described by Andy MacMillan as "one of the most unusual houses in Scotland" and represents McLennan's last major domestic commission. Other examples of his work include several houses on Thornly Park Avenue and the category 'A' listed Bull Inn on New Street, Paisley.
The southwest elevation features a projecting castellated tower-like bay that breaks the eaves to the right, with windows on each floor. To the left, there is a first-floor tripartite window under a deep eaves overhang. The building has modern glazing and grey-green slates, with heavily fluted stacks topped with oversized flat cantilever coping. The flat-coped skews have blockish skewputts and finials.
An ancillary structure, which was formerly a garage, has been converted into a dwelling.
