Description
W D McLennan, 1924-6. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, L-plan villa on prominent hill top site with unusual Tudorised Art Deco detail and oversized cantilevered coping to stacks. Reinforced concrete appearing as red sandstone.
NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: broad steps with flanking dwarf walls lead to slightly recessed centre bay with stylised Gibbsean doorcase, timber door and flanking small bipartites; V-plan bay above with window at 1st floor below eaves overhang and 2 ridge stacks. Described by MacMillan as "one of the most unusual houses in Scotland", Thorscrag was McLennan's last major domestic commission. Further examples of his work are 10, 12,16 and 31 Thornly Park Avenue and 11 South Avenue as well as the category 'A' listed 'Bull Inn' at New Street, Paisley.
each floor of full-height castellated canted bay and tripartite in finialled gablehead. Broader finialled gable to right with 5-part 'castellated' window clasping outer right angle at ground; bipartites at 1st floor and gablehead framed by cornice and pilasters.
SW ELEVATION: projecting castellated tower-like bay breaking eaves to right with windows to each floor, and 1st floor tripartite to left under deep eaves overhang.
Modern glazing. Grey/green? slates. Heavily fluted stacks with oversized flat cantilever-effect coping. Flat-coped skews with blockish skewputts and finials.
ANCILLARY STRUCTURE: rectangular-plan ancillary (former garage?) converted to dwelling.
