Description

Auchnahyle Farm is an 18th century and later small steading that features a long single-storey range, which was formerly a threshing mill, alongside an adjoining horse mill. The building is constructed of random rubble and was restored after suffering fire damage in 2000.

The south elevation of the E-W range has four bays of varying heights. To the right of the center is a tall range with a two-leaf boarded timber door on the left at ground level, and a forestair leading to a hayloft door above. There is a small window immediately to the right of this door, with a modern rooflight above it. To the right is a two-leaf timber garage door. The outer right bay has a single window on the left and two traditional rooflights. To the left, there is a lower bay with a boarded timber door in the center and windows in the flanking bays, along with small rooflights over the outer bays. The cottage at the outer left features a timber porch, a central door, and windows in the flanking bays, with later flat-roofed dormer windows breaking the eaves over the outer bays.

The north elevation presents a variety of elements leading to a small courtyard at the rear, including lean-to timber bays, a long catslide roof at the back of the hayloft, and later brick and harl extensions.

The N-S range has a long single-storey west elevation with boarded timber doors in the center and right bays, a tiny window beyond to the right, and a sliding timber garage door at the outer right. There is also a small window to the left and stone-blocked ventilation openings, along with two small traditional rooflights. The north elevation features a gabled bay with a door that has been converted to a window in the gablehead.

The east elevation showcases a fine circular horse mill at the outer right, which has a broad two-leaf boarded timber door to the north and a similar opening to the south, topped with a complete timbered and felted conical roof.

To the west, there is a small cottage with a part-glazed timber door in the center and a small horizontally-aligned window in the bay to the right. The building features small-pane glazing patterns in the timber windows, which include casement and sash and case styles. The roofs are covered with grey slates, with corrugated material on the rear of the E-W range. Coped squared rubble stacks with cans are present throughout the structure.
