Description
Trinity College in Glenalmond is a large collegiate Gothic structure built around three quadrangles, with the northern and southern quadrangles opening into one another. A central library building connects the cloister links, although the northeast quadrangle remains unfinished, with only the northern side completed. The building is constructed of snecked red sandstone and is mainly two stories with an attic.
The entrance front is symmetrical and features a four-story gate tower. The college was originally designed by architect John Henderson, with construction beginning in 1843 and the first phase completed on 8th September 1846. The nearby symmetrical west wing includes a gatehouse and the original Warden's House, both completed in 1847. The northern wing was built in 1847-1848, and the chapel was completed in 1851, featuring stained glass by Powell, although a planned spire was not built. The hall was constructed between 1861 and 1863, with significant redesign work by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The gymnasium, designed by A.G. Heiton, was completed in 1889.
A block between the chapel and hall, which includes a new wing and laboratory, was built in 1892-1893 by George Henderson, and the library was added by A.G. Heiton between 1904 and 1906. The Matheson building and New Cloister were completed in 1926 and 1932, along with a new warden's house in 1927, designed by J. Donald Mills and G.D.B. Shepherd. The north wing was reconstructed in 1932-1933, and the west wing was completed in 1935-1936. Chapel furnishings include a War Memorial from 1922 and the Neish Memorial from 1939, both designed by Sir J. Ninian Comper, as well as a west screen in the chapel by Sir Basil Spence.
