Description
Ashgrove Works, located on Ashgrove Road in Rattray, is a mid-19th century building constructed from rubble, featuring two storeys and an attic that was raised and reconstructed around 1950. The site includes a breast water-wheel that measures 24 feet in diameter and 19 feet wide, which is still in daily use and has a power output of 180 horsepower. The water-wheel was made by Thomson Brothers in Dundee in 1871 and works in tandem with a diesel engine. Originally, the site operated with a horizontal single expansion engine made by Pearce in Dundee in 1865, which is still used occasionally. A double helical gear was added in 1892.
