Description
This is a possibly 17th-century sundial situated within the Octagonal Garden to the northeast of Dowery House. It is a detached sundial featuring an elaborate facet dial surmounted by a hemispherical dial. The sundial is supported by a ribbed hemisphere and a thick baluster, with the lower parts believed to be of later construction. The design is reminiscent of a smaller version of the sundial at Pitmedden Garden in Aberdeenshire, dating to 1675. The unusual hemispherical finial sits atop what may be a truncated neck, and the squat baluster pediment is typical.
Dowery House itself dates from the 17th century, a period when formal gardens, including sundials, became increasingly popular alongside traditional tower houses. Early publications provided detailed instructions for constructing accurate sundials.
The sundial is part of a group of buildings of architectural or historic interest, along with Dowery House and other sundials within the grounds of Stobhall. The group also includes other listed buildings.
