Description

The Summer House at Stobhall Castle, designed by Stewart Tod and Partners between 1987 and 1989, is a single-storey, octagonal structure with a basement formed by a terraced wall. It is specifically built to house exceptional and rare early 18th century panelling from a summer house at Polton. The building is located to the north of Dowery House at the end of the main drive.

The exterior features harled brick and concrete block construction, with stone facings around the main door and concrete margins for additional openings. The entrance is on the east elevation, featuring a doorway set in a narrow flank at the center, topped with a block lintel and a pointed arch. A Y-traceried fanlight is above the door, which is approached by a short flight of railed steps and has a studded timber door. The canted sides of the entrance have pointed arch niches that contain pedestalled acorn finials.

The north and south elevations are mirror images of each other, each having a boarded door to the basement at the center, with a blank space above and a small window in the flank to the rear, along with a window to the summer house above. The west elevation features a wallhead stack at the center face.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with Y-traceried upper sashes. The polygonal roof is covered with graded grey slates and includes a weathervane finial and a cast-iron rooflight.

Inside, the summer house is lined with the Polton panelling, where each panel features trompe-l'oeil painting of stylised fielded panelling with an 'O' in the center. The west wall has a chimneypiece with a moulded surround, pulvinated frieze, and a moulded mantelpiece. The ceiling has a coved timber cornice with further painted board and trompe-l'oeil panelling. The basement has plastered walls and includes water closets.
