Description
The Abbey Church on Queen Street in Coupar Angus is a Gothic revival building, dating from 1859-60, designed by architect John Carver of Kinloch (Meigle). It features early pointed and second pointed architectural styles, constructed from red rubble with white sandstone dressings. The church has a south porch and a northwest tower topped with a slated spirelet. Its external appearance includes aisles and a large west window that maintains an original and successful outline.
Inside, the church boasts a remarkable hammerbeam roof that is well designed and executed, along with a west gallery. Notable interior features include a recumbent effigy of Edward Hay, a font made from a nave pier with a base and hollowed capital, and a panel of low relief figures.
