Description

The Sheiling is an Arts and Crafts style villa dated 1911 and designed by George Cunnison. It is a single storey and attic building with three bays, and exhibits fine interior detailing. The walls are harled with stone cills, and the doorpiece features raised red sandstone ashlar voussoirs arranged in a wishbone arch. Timber mullions are a key architectural feature.

The southwest (principal) elevation has a low-angled gable extending over the centre bay, sheltering a panelled timber door with a decoratively glazed pointed-arch fanlight and a small shaped light to the right. A battered angle buttress sits beyond. To the left is a dominant gabled bay featuring a four-light window, a terracotta sundial, and a smaller horizontal tripartite window set within the finialled gablehead. A set-back bay to the right of the centre has a tripartite window and a horizontal, flat-roofed dormer window above.

The northwest elevation shows a broad gabled bay with a small window in the gablehead. The northeast (rear) elevation has a large, swept-roof porch with a cast-iron column in the re-entrant angle. Part-glazed timber doors lead to outhouses. The centre bay features a tripartite window, while a large single window sits above in the gablehead, with a further tripartite to the outer right. Flat-roofed tripartite dormer windows are set over the outer bays. The southeast elevation mirrors the northwest, with a small window in the gablehead.

The windows feature fine leaded coloured glazing, with bullseye details, except on the ground floor northeast side and the left side of the northwest elevation, where a four-pane glazing pattern is found in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey/green slates, complemented by decorative terracotta ridge tiles and finials. Harled stacks have oversized flat copes and terracotta cans. Mutuled bargeboarding is present, along with cast-iron downpipes and a decorative rainwater hopper dated 1911.

The interior retains a good original decorative scheme, including decorative plasterwork cornicing, timber panelling, and oak doors with decorative door furniture and coloured glass top lights. Built-in cupboards feature decorative leaded and coloured glazing. An oak dog-leg staircase has plain battered balusters and coped newels. Timber fire surrounds are accented by tiled cheeks, some with overmantels and brass canopies. Two principal bedrooms have built-in cupboards with decoratively-glazed doors.

A boarded timber ancillary building of rectangular plan is located to the northeast, complete with a decorative pelmet. A decorative ironwork gate with an arch provides access.
