Description
This is a mid-19th century building with later shop alterations from the 1920s, comprising a traditional shop and an adjacent house. The building is located at 17 and 19 Perth Street, Blairgowrie.
The building is constructed of coursed ashlar with contrasting black whinstone in an Aberdeen bond, with black paint on the northeastern side and white-painted pointing. Raised base, band, and eaves courses are present along with stone mullions.
The principal, southeastern elevation is divided into two sections. Number 17 features a full-width fixed display window set on a green tile base, with multi-pane, margined, leaded glazing reading 'PORK BUTCHER & BACON CURER' in the top light. A canted angle to the right incorporates a recessed doorway with a mosaic-tiled floor and ceramic-tiled wall, featuring a panel depicting pigs and piglets, flanked by pilasters. A full-width frieze displays 'H W IRVINE BACON CURER', topped by a cornice with moulded brackets. The first floor has a flat roof with a timber-shingled apron below a tripartite window and a narrow bipartite window over a painted sign. Number 19 presents a symmetrical facade with a panelled timber door and decorative leaded fanlight incorporating the name 'KNOCK MA HAR' at ground level. A single window sits above the door, with further single windows in the flanking bays at ground level and bipartite windows at the first floor.
The northeastern elevation has a gabled bay to the left, alongside the flat-roofed bay (as described above). A single window is placed on the first floor to the right. Lower bays to the right feature three irregularly-disposed openings at ground level. A window is located to the left at the first floor, while a broad, boarded timber door breaks the eaves into a flat roof to the right.
The southwestern elevation is plain ashlar and gabled, with two windows on the first floor.
Plate glass glazing is used in timber sash and case windows at number 19. Number 17’s southeastern elevation at the first floor has multi-pane top lights over timber casement windows. Other windows are timber with various openings. The roof is covered with grey slates, and brick stacks have decorative cans. Overhanging eaves and plain bargeboarding are also present.
The shop interior of number 17 is fully-lined with ceramic tiles, featuring a variety of green borders. Window tiling spells out 'BACON CURER', 'H W IRVINE', and 'BUTCHER', alongside a panel depicting three pigs.
