Description

The Steading House and Bothy Cottage at Dirnanean Steading date from the late 1860s, with later 19th century additions and post-1930 dormers added to the domestic range. This U-plan courtyard steading features a single storey and attic, 7-bay domestic range, and a gablehead dovecot to the south. The structure is built of rubble with squared granite margins and quoins.

The south elevation of the Steading House and Bothy Cottage is symmetrical, with a slightly advanced gabled bay at the center. This bay contains a narrow light and a diminutive 5-hole dovecot, which was replaced in 1989, along with a stone alighting ledge and flanking corbels or brackets. Each of the flanking bays has a window and a timber door beyond, with a single dormer window above, positioned asymmetrically. The broad outer bays feature taller gables with windows on each floor. All gableheads are topped with decorative ironwork finials.

The windows are timber sash and case with an 8-pane lying glazing pattern. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are coped ashlar ridge stacks with sawtooth-coped ashlar skews and moulded skewputts.

The east range consists of former threshing and straw barns, with most internal divisions now removed. There is a detached later 19th century sawmill building to the east, and a wheelpit located between this and the threshing barn, which once housed a rim-drive overshot wheel that powered both machines. A lade formerly carried water over the roadway on a raised aqueduct, and the sluice remains in position.

The north range features a covered cattle court with an impressive scissor-truss and braced roof spanning a wide area, likely added in the later 19th century. The west range serves as the entrance front, flanked by two piend-roofed stable blocks with lofts on either side of the entrance courtyard.
