Description
Monzie Castle is a 3-storey L-plan building that dates back to 1634. It features carved dormer heads above the windows and a pedimented doorway. The castle is constructed from rubble and has scratch dials located at several windows and at the southeast angle. Inside, there is a notable fireplace with a large lintel adorned with swags and a coat of arms, also dated 1634, which was modified around 1785-90.
The mansion includes additional features in the Adam castellated style, with four corner towers and a bowed four-storey central section, also built from rubble. The architect John Paterson from Edinburgh designed these additions. After a fire, the interior was rebuilt by architect Sir Robert Lorimer between 1908 and 1912, showcasing notable wood and plasterwork. Two significant marble fireplaces from around 1725 were salvaged from the fire and remain part of the interior.
