Description
The churchyard at Monzie Parish Church features a rubble-walled enclosure with a retaining wall along the roadside. It holds a representative collection of 19th century grave markers that are relatively modest in scale and detail, alongside a few notable earlier stones. Adjacent to the church is a small Campbell burial enclosure that includes at least one monument from the mid-17th century. Within the churchyard, there is also a rare dual-language stone dated 1793, which has a Gaelic inscription on the front and an English translation on the back. Other 18th century stones include the carved headstones of Andrew Mathie, dated 1754, and Neil McAra, dated 1779.
The churchyard's development is closely linked to the history of the parish. The current church, designed by William Stirling, was built in 1830 and is situated on or near the site of an earlier parish church from 1685, which may have incorporated materials from a church dating back to the 13th century. The layout of the church and churchyard has largely remained unchanged since the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1863. The church is still used occasionally, following the union of the congregations of Fowlis Wester, Gask, Madderty, and Monzie churches in 2018.
