Description
Strathallan School's Main Building, designed by William Burn in 1825 as Freeland House for Lord Ruthven, incorporates considerable parts of an earlier house. This large, asymmetrical 2 to 3-storey Tudor Gothic mansion features pre-1825 rubble work and stugged ashlar from 1825. The interior is notable, with a central hall on the first floor that includes a lantern light and finely detailed ceilings of various types in the principal rooms. The drawing room has Louis Quinze surrounds to the panels, while early Renaissance chimneypieces of good design were added later. The staff room retains details from around 1780, a remnant of the earlier house. Unfortunately, the eastern facade has been enclosed by school additions made after 1921.
