Description

The Former Tullymet Baptist Chapel, located by Ballinluig in Tullymet, was built in 1847. This single-storey, four-bay building has a rectangular plan and features a single-storey lean-to entrance vestibule on the southeast side. The chapel is constructed of coursed rubble, and the windows primarily consist of timber lying-panes with top hoppers set in timber casements, all with flat stone cills. The gable ends are squat and coped, topped with clay cans, and the roof is pitched, covered with graded slates. The entrance includes a two-leaf timber door with a fanlight above it. Additionally, there is a large square opening with a two-leaf timber door on the northeast side, which was added in the early 1980s, and above this door is a blocked window opening.

The interior was observed in 2015. The main worship space features a coombed ceiling and partial remnants of a trompe l'oeil painting on the southeast wall, where the pulpit once stood. There is a sunken concrete baptismal pool in the southeast corner, which has a timber cover. The walls are painted up to dado height. A small entrance vestibule to the northeast has a flagstone floor, and there is a vestry to the north, accessible from the vestibule. The vestry includes a fireplace with a simple timber surround and a cast iron insert, as well as a nine-pane timber casement window with a bottom hopper. Throughout the chapel, there are timber panelled doors and timber floors in both the main worship space and the vestry.
