Description
Ecclesmagirdle Chapel is a small, roofless rectangular chapel, likely dating from the late pre-Reformation period. The building features a modern semi-rubble construction with internal dimensions of 25 feet 7 inches by 11 feet 5 inches. It has a square-headed doorway on the southwest side and a single small round-headed window on the southeast side, which displays "voussoir" lines. There is also a single round-headed window on the east and an altered square-headed window on the west. Inside, there is a plain square aumbry. Surrounding the chapel is a churchyard wall dated 1651, inscribed with "STIL REA DEI," and there is a small collection of notable 17th-century gravestones, including that of Thomas Smal, a covenanting martyr from 1645.
