Description
The Forge at Blairforge is an early 19th century estate smithy, built as a combined workshop and house. The building has two symmetrical, three-bay frontages, with wings extending to the northwest, creating a U-shaped layout when viewed from the rear. The domestic block faces south towards the road, while the smithy workshop fronts north. The construction is of rubble, with a pitched pantiled roof, ashlar skew stones, and apex stacks over the gables and a partition wall on the main southeast range. An earlier brick and pantiled lean-to is attached to the south elevation of the rear wing of the northern block. A modern flat-roofed porch addition sits in the rear, northeast re-entrant angle.
The main (southeast) elevation presents two symmetrical three-bay facades; the domestic block on the left, and the smithy workshop on the right. A glazed, modern porch addition obscures the central entrance bay of the domestic block. Segmental-headed windows, lacking arches, are largely fitted with original 12-pane sash and case windows. The southwest gable end of the domestic block has one replaced window with fixed multi-pane glazing and boarded lower panels. The workshop entrance retains its original vertically-boarded door. Original glazing and doors are also present on the side and rear elevations.
The interior of the workshop remains unaltered and contains early forge equipment and tools.
The Forge was formerly part of the policies of the Blair Adam estate. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1854 and 1896, offer additional context.
