Description
Cleish Castle is a 16th-century tower house designed in an L-plan, featuring three storeys and a garret above a basement. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and has a slated roof with corbie steps. Although the interior was altered in 1845, the kitchen with a great fireplace still remains on the first storey. A turnpike stair leads to the second storey, and there is a corbelled stair-turret on the east side that has an inserted pediment inscribed 'R.C./B.H. 1600'.
Around 1840, additions were made, including a porch and stair in the re-entrance angle, as well as offices at the west end, which feature an earlier sundial dated 1711. The castle previously had a court, and a notable architectural feature is the south gable, which rises in a series of offsets. The walls were thinned during the 1845 alterations, the vaulting was removed from the basement chamber of the main block, and the windows were enlarged.
