Description
Glendoick House, built around 1746-1748 for Lord President Craigie, is a two-storey building with a full basement and attic. The main south elevation features five windows, with a central bay that is advanced and topped with a pediment. It has a Venetian doorway with a broken pediment and a flyover stair. The exterior is harled with margins and quoined angles, and it has a very steep peind roof with a slight bell cast and two chimneys. At the rear, there is a courtyard, and the west wing is a single-storey structure with a semi-elliptical pend arch and a Venetian window at the front. The north and east wings have been raised to two storeys and feature swept dormer heads. The architect A.G. Heiton made alterations in 1910.
Inside, the house is panelled from the basement to the attics. It boasts a very fine hall staircase made of Rannoch pine, with a platt stair and a half-landing supported by an Ionic pilaster, along with rococo plasterwork. The drawing room has a covered ceiling with rococo plasterwork, while the dining room features an Ionic Venetian element with a scrolled pediment and a large niche with sliding doors. The original features throughout the house are extremely complete.
