Description
Auchenross, located at The Ross in Comrie, is a large two-storey and attic arts-and-crafts mansion built around 1910 by Foster Lovell & Lodge of London. The building features a design influenced by the Voysey school and is constructed from locally sourced plastered rubble with Auchenheath dressings at the main entrance. The roofs are slated.
The main entrance faces southwest and is flanked by gables at each end, which include canted bays on both floors. The windows have wooden mullions and transoms with leaded glass, although many have been reglazed, particularly on the south side where the mullions and transoms have been removed. The entrance includes an open porch with a segmental canopy and a sculptured tympanum. To the right of the entrance, there is a large stair window with four lights, while the remaining fenestration is random, featuring Auchenheath margins and mullions with leaded glass.
The northwest gable has a two-window arrangement with an asymmetrical ground floor outshot that spans the full width of the gable. The southeast gable features an asymmetrical chimney and a piended two-storey outshot with two windows on the east side, along with a glazed porch in the re-entrant angle. The high slated roof has broad eaves, except at the gables, which have short returns on the northwest and southeast sides.
