Description
Quivals Farmhouse is a possibly 18th-century, two-storey, five-bay house with a long, rectangular plan and crowstepped gables. Originally a school, it features an asymmetrical design and has undergone alterations and additions. There is a single-storey, single-bay projection to the west, and the building is harled. The first-floor windows are smaller and set close under the eaves. To the east, there are L-plan, coursed rubble byre ranges, along with a later harled rectangular-plan garage or barn.
On the south (principal) elevation, there is a window at ground level in the central bay. To the right of the centre, a boarded door with a small-pane fanlight leads to a gabled porch, with a window above it on the first floor. There is a window in the outer right bay at each floor. A boarded door to a lean-to addition is slightly recessed to the east. To the left of centre, there is another boarded door with a rectangular fanlight at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor, and a window in the outer left bay at each floor. The single-storey projection to the west has a window in a flat-roofed porch and a boarded door on the right return.
The north (rear) elevation features four irregularly disposed windows at ground level and a central window on the first floor above. The east (side) elevation has a lean-to projection at ground level and is blank above, with a gablehead stack. The west (side) elevation includes a gabled projection at ground level, is blank above, and also has a gablehead stack.
The house has timber sash and case windows with 4, 12, and 24 panes, along with small rooflights. The roof is covered with graded traditional stone tiles, including the porch and projections, and features stone ridges and corniced, harled gablehead stacks on the east and west sides, with stone skews. The rainwater goods are predominantly uPVC.
The barn ranges consist of single-storey L-plan byres with equal arms, featuring irregularly disposed boarded doors and timber-framed windows on the internal elevations. They have a graded traditional stone tile door, stone ridge, and stone skews. The interiors of both the farmhouse and barn were not seen in 1998.
Boundary walls include a low rubble wall along the south elevation, extending to the left of the main porch, and a rubble wall at the rear of the main house that encloses a large rectangular garden.
