Description
17 St Catherine's Place in Kirkwall is a row of four houses built around 1805, with later alterations. Number 18 is likely a mid to late 19th century addition. The two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan houses form a terrace that extends back from the street, featuring a gable end at Number 15 facing the street and a single-storey entrance addition at the southeast angle of Number 18. Number 15 is cement-rendered and lined, while the others are harled. The first-floor windows are set close under the eaves with deep-set openings, and the entrance elevation is paved with Caithness flagstones.
On the principal east elevation, Number 15, located at the far west, has a modern timber door in the central bay and a window on each floor in the flanking bays. Number 16 features a part-glazed modern timber panelled door in the central bay, with windows in the flanking bays. Number 17 has a modern, part-glazed timber panelled door at ground level in the central bay and a window above on the first floor, with additional windows in each flanking bay. Number 18, at the far east, has a window in the central bay on each floor, a window at ground level in the left bay, and a window in the entrance addition to the right, along with a modern timber panelled door on the left return.
The west elevation facing St Catherine's Place has two bays, with a window at ground level in the left bay and a window on the first floor in the right bay, topped by a gablehead stack. The windows on Numbers 15 and 16 are two-pane timber sash and case, while Number 17 has four-pane timber sash and case windows. Number 18 features modern timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights. The roof of Number 15 is traditionally stone tiled, while Numbers 17 and 18 have replaced graded traditional stone tiled roofs, and Number 16 has a grey slate roof. The ridge and gablehead stacks of Numbers 16, 17, and 18 are harled with cornices, while Number 15 has a cement-rendered and lined corniced gablehead stack. The properties predominantly feature uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
