10 St Catherine's Place, Kirkwall

11 St Catherine's Place in Kirkwall is a row of four houses built around 1805, with later alterations and additions. These two-storey, three-bay houses have a rectangular plan and feature crowstepped gables facing the street, with harled exteriors. The first-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves, except for Number 9, which breaks the eaves.

On the principal (south) elevation, Number 12, located at the extreme west, has a modern, part-glazed timber door leading to a single-storey gabled porch with a spike finial in the central bay. There is a window in the right return and another window at the first floor above. Each bay flanking this house has enlarged windows on both floors. Number 11 features a deep-set, part-glazed timber panelled door at ground level in the central bay, with a small, non-aligned window above. The flanking bays have enlarged windows at ground level and standard windows at the first floor. Number 10 has a deep-set modern timber door in the central bay, with windows at each floor in the flanking bays. Number 9, at the extreme east, has a deep-set, modern boarded door at ground level in the central bay, with windows at each floor in the flanking bays.

The rear (north) elevation is irregularly fenestrated. Number 12 has a single bay with a centered window on each floor. Number 11 has a window in the central bay on each floor, with additional windows in the left bay and one at ground level in the right bay. Number 10 has a window in the central bay on each floor and ground-level windows in the flanking bays. Number 9 has a small window in the central bay on each floor, with ground-level windows in the flanking bays.

The houses exhibit a variety of glazing patterns, including timber- and aluminium-framed windows with top-hung upper lights, some timber sash and case windows, and rooflights on the north pitches. The roofs are covered with grey slate, some of which have been replaced, and feature stone ridges, stone skews at the west end, and harled, corniced common ridge and gablehead stacks. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron and uPVC.

The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
