Description
North House is a traditional Orkney long house dating from the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a single-storey, five-bay rectangular building with crowstep gables. The eastern side serves as a dwelling house, while the western gable end features a barn with a circular-plan kiln. There are remnants of additional farm buildings running parallel to the south. The structure is built of squared rubble with a harl-pointed finish, and there is a central mechanism for a former horse walk located to the north of the barn.
On the south elevation, the dwelling house has four bays, with a boarded door in the bay to the left of centre and a window in the outer left bay. There are windows in each of the three bays to the right, and a doorway in the barn bay on the outer right. The north elevation features a blocked window to the right of centre. The east elevation has a window set to the right in the gabled section, with a wide gablehead stack above. The west elevation includes the circular-plan kiln that abuts the gabled elevation.
Inside the dwelling house, there is a plain fire surround with a bracketed mantleshelf on the west side of the dividing wall, and a press to the right with some timber shelves still present. A plain fireplace is located on the west wall, and the main fabric of box beds remains. Various presses can be found in the external walls. In the mill/barn area, exposed rafters and tie beams are visible, along with steps leading to a square-headed entrance to the kiln at the west end, where the kiln ledge is intact. The windows are mostly missing, with a fixed timber-framed window on the east side. The roof is predominantly covered with stone slate, while the east end and the south pitch of the barn have a corrugated-iron roof. The gablehead and ridge stacks are made of rubble and feature cornices.
