Description

St Boniface's Church in Papa Westray dates back to the 12th century, with alterations made around 1710, repairs in 1843, and restoration completed in 1993. This single-storey church has a rectangular plan and features crow-stepped gables, constructed from harled rubble. The west gable end includes a door set into a rubble forestair, leading to a timber door for the gallery above. The south elevation has two windows, while the north elevation features a window to the left and a blocked arrow slit in the center. The church has 4-pane timber sash and case windows and a pitched roof covered with stone slates.

Inside, the church was largely reconstructed in 1993 to reflect an 18th-century arrangement, reusing sections of original timbers where possible. It includes a timber pulpit with a sounding board on the south side, timber box pews to the east, and a timber wainscoting gallery to the west. There is also a plaque dedicated to Laura Grimond, who lived from 1918 to 1994. New flagstones have been laid over the remains of earlier flagstones, and the timber ceiling joists have been repaired and renewed.

The churchyard is a rectangular burial ground featuring 19th-century and later burial monuments. A low wall surrounds the Traill family burial enclosure, which is located to the east of the church. The boundary is marked by tall rubble walls with upright coping stones, gate piers to the northeast, and a replacement iron gate.

Additionally, the below-ground remains of the church and part of the surrounding burial ground, including a 12th-century hog-backed tombstone, are scheduled as a monument. For further details, refer to Scheduled Monument No 1484.
