Description

Motherwell Mill is a complex of mill buildings dating to around 1880, and later converted to recreational use in 1978. It comprises an L-shaped arrangement of gabled ranges. The construction is primarily of squared, yellow sandstone coursers, with much of the exterior finished with harling.

The north range features a three-bay, two-storey mill house in the south (courtyard) elevation, with a visible basement. A large, modern, timber-framed oriel window is positioned in the ground floor of the outer left bay, while the first-floor windows have swept dormerheads that break the eaves. The outer right bays are obscured by an adjoining eastern range. A lower, three-bay addition is visible at the west gable end, with a blind, harled upper storey. The west (side) elevation is a simple, blind gable end. The rear (north) elevation is partly obscured by a two-storey, modern addition of four gabled bays and a single-storey bay set into the bank, with a door in the centre. The east (river) elevation features a gable end with paired windows and projecting cills in both the ground and first floors, a walled-in doorway, and access to the exposed basement level at river height.

The eastern range consists of a seven-bay, gabled building. A single-storey, four-bay gabled building with an attic abuts the north range. This section features a modern door to the left of a timber lean-to porch, dormerheads breaking the eaves of the attic windows, and a large, square-plan, modern stair tower in the third bay. The ground level shows exposed squared rubble, with another dormer breaking the eaves of the fourth bay. A single-storey, three-bay, gabled building of a steeper pitch adjoins the gable end of the fourth bay; it has squared rubble construction, with bowed dormers in the first and third bays. A two-bay return is present to the south, along with a piended roof and eaves-height wallhead stack to the west end. A window is located to the left return, and a bowed window and door to the right return. The rear (east) elevation includes an eaves-height lean-to addition to the outer right bay, a single-storey lean-to addition to the left, upper-storey windows at wallhead height, and a larger addition with a piended roof to the fifth bay. A wallhead stack is centrally located on the south building, and the fenestration is regular. The south (side) elevation is a gable end with a single-storey, three-bay, flat-roofed addition.

Modern timber-framed windows are prevalent throughout. The roof is covered in grey slates, with raised skews and coped gable end stacks.

The interior has been largely gutted and refitted, primarily as a hotel. The main dining room retains some original machinery, floorboards, and beams from the mill. A mill wheel, sluice gate, watercourse, and drive remain in working order beneath the restaurant, visible through a perspex window set into the floor.
