Description

171-173 Main Street in Wishaw is a late 19th-century, three-storey building with nine bays, situated at a corner location. The ground floor features shops, while the upper part of the building is highlighted by a domed corner turret topped with a prominent projecting cornice adorned with modillions and a broad attic entablature that is inscribed with 'RICHMOND PLACE'. The third-storey windows are accentuated by segmental pediments that break the eaves. The building is constructed from red ashlar sandstone and features cavetto moulding on the dividing band between the first and second storeys, as well as at the eaves course. The corner bays have projecting banded quoins, and the bipartite windows are framed with cavetto moulded architraves and feature projecting keystones and consoled cills.

The northeast (principal) elevation presents an asymmetrical nine-bay façade with regular fenestration, except for the fourth and fifth bays which have single windows topped with small shouldered segmental pediments. The second bay from the right has a plain single window. A semicircular turret is located at the far right, projecting from the chamfered ground floor at the dividing band, complete with a console and a swept lead dome that is topped with a large needle finial.

The northwest (secondary) elevation consists of five asymmetrical bays, featuring single windows with small shouldered segmental pediments on three bays to the right, along with an off-centre wall head chimney. The left side has two bays with segmental arches.

The southeast and southwest elevations are obscured by adjacent buildings. The southeast (rear) elevation displays irregular fenestration with breaking eaves dormers and includes two-storey harled brick additions with lean-to roofs.

The building predominantly features modern double glazing, with two-pane timber sash and case windows on the second floor of the corner turret. The roof is covered with grey slates and has lead ridges, with sandstone coped ridge stacks on each bay. The interior has modern shop fittings on the ground floor, while the tenements were not visible in 2000.
