4 Kirkstyle Cottages, Kirkshaws Road, Coatbridge

3 Kirkstyle Cottages, located on Kirkshaws Road in Coatbridge, were designed by Thomas Smith and completed in 1904, with additions made to the east gable of the eastmost block in 1913. These Tudor-style cottages consist of two pairs of single-storey and attic, semi-detached buildings that are nearly identical and symmetrical, featuring gabled dormers. The exterior is half-timbered and harled.

Each pair of cottages includes a central block with two oriel windows at the ground floor, flanked by single windows. There is a terracotta panel at the center and a terracotta date panel at the center of the jettied attic floor. The cottages also have two dormers and lychgate-type entrance porches on both sides, as well as single-storey bays on the far left and right, which feature an oriel window and a swept roof, except for the east cottage of the westmost block. The return gables are each slightly different, with an outshot on the right return of the westmost block. The attic floor is jettied, and the bargeboards are plain. There are porches at the rear.

The entrance doors are boarded, with a plate glass window for No. 2 and an arched glazed window for No. 1, along with sidelights. Nos. 1 and 2 have multipane timber glazing, while Nos. 3 and 4 feature replacement glazing and doors. The cottages have a slate roof made of small graded slates, with finned and dentilled terracotta ridges, large slender central brick stacks that are balustraded at the top, and single gablehead stacks with fishscale-tiled gabled caps.

Inside, some good simple Edwardian detailing remains, including panelled doors with two lying panels over two vertical panels, timber dado boarding in the entrance hall and stairs, and plain squared timber banisters on the turned stair. There are niches on the landings, and some timber boarding in the upper bedroom and a timber fire surround in No. 1.

The boundary walls consist of low walls with taller squared, capped gatepiers.
