Description

This is a probably late 18th century farmhouse, significantly extended in the mid to later 19th century. It is two storeys with an attic, and the original house has a gabled form, extended at a right angle to the west with a taller two-storey range. The original house is constructed of yellow rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and quoins. The later addition uses squared and snecked whin rubble with contrasting dressings and ashlar quoins, a first-floor lintel course, base and cill courses, stone mullions, and chamfered arrises.

The south elevation, which is the main entrance front, comprises a three-bay original house to the right, with the advanced gable of the later addition to the left. A later red sandstone ashlar porch set in the re-entrant angle to the left has a deeply moulded Tudor-arched doorway with a two-leaf panelled timber door, flanking side lights, a shaped fanlight, and a round-headed light to the left, all under a moulded cornice and stepped parapet featuring a blank shield. A window is located in the bay to the right, and a lean-to timber structure is at centre. The first floor has three regularly spaced windows. The attic floor has a stone gable breaking the eaves in the centre, with a window, and gabled wallhead dormers breaking the eaves in flanking bays. The dominant gabled bay to the left features a slightly projecting, stone-roofed, square-plan tripartite window at ground level, rising to a flusher corniced bipartite window on the first floor.

The west elevation of the addition shows a gabled bay to the right of centre with two single windows at ground level, flanking a canted pillar corbelled to a canted window at first floor. Immediately to the left of centre is a single narrow light to each floor, and a broad advanced gable to the outer left with a window to each floor.

The north (rear) elevation is dominated by a circular stair tower that breaks the eaves in the re-entrant angle between the recessed bays of the original house and the advanced gable of the addition. A lean-to bay projects from the stair tower at ground level. To the left are bays with a garage door at ground level, and two windows above.

The east elevation is a blank gabled facade.

The earlier part of the farmhouse has 10 and 12-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows, some with lying panes, except for the gablehead window in the centre of the south elevation. Modern replacement glazing is present elsewhere. Grey slates cover the older part, with a corrugated metal roof. A circular cupola sits atop the stair tower. The chimneys are cavetto-coped ashlar stacks, some with cans. Overhanging eaves have plain bargeboarding and decorative brackets.
