Description
This is a semi-detached pair of Canadian timber Commissioners houses built in 1938 for the Scottish Special Housing Association (SSHA) by Red Cedar Supply Company of Glasgow. The houses were designed as an experiment, influenced by designs by Basil Spence, and were among the first timber houses built by the SSHA between 1937 and 1941.
The houses are rectangular in plan, with three bays each. They feature horizontal log cabin boarding up to window sill height, with shingles above and to the gabled porches. The entrance elevation has bipartite windows in the centre bay, gabled porches supported by timber posts to the bays adjacent to the centre, and single windows in the outer bays. The entrances are protected by part-glazed inner vestibule doors. The windows are timber framed, and the roof is covered with concrete tiles. Harled brick stacks are located on the outer pitches.
The houses at Carfin were constructed quickly to coincide with a royal visit to open the Empire Exhibition at Bellahouston Park in May 1938, and were inspected by King George and Queen Elizabeth. They are situated in an area designated for accelerated housing development to serve an industrial estate. Further examples of Canadian timber Commissioners houses can be found in Fordyce.
