Description

Carrick Lodge, in Brodick on the Isle of Arran, is a late 19th-century building that originally served as a Free Church Manse. It is an irregular-shaped, two-storey structure built of stugged and snecked red rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings. The roof is primarily green slate, with red tiles covering the conical roof of a canted window. A string course runs along the first floor on the north side, and a moulded eaves course is present along with crowstepped gables featuring skewputts. The chimney stacks are topped with coping, and most of the rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The windows are a mix of single and bipartite designs. The original timber sash and case window frames have largely been replaced with UPVC, although some original frames remain on a two-storey canted window and a first-floor tripartite angle window; these retain multiple panes at the top and a single pane at the bottom.

The west-facing front elevation features a central gable with a bipartite window on the ground floor and first floor to the right. To the left is a lower, two-storey entrance gable with a bipartite window on the ground floor and a single window with a moulded, pointed-arch lintel above. A door is located on the left return, featuring a moulded doorcase and a pointed-arch panel above it. A single window is positioned on the ground and first floors of the left return of the main gable. Large bay recesses are found to the left, containing a small window on the ground floor and a stair window above. A lower recessed bay is on the right, with a window and two modern rooflights. A modern addition is on the far right.

On the north elevation, an advanced gable to the right has a two-storey, three-light canted window. A recessed bay to the left includes a ground-floor window, and a window at a splayed angle features a tripartite canted window, which corbelled to the first floor and is covered by a pyramidal roof.

The east elevation has a blank bay to the right and a gable to the left with a window on the ground floor and a wallhead stack to the right. A single-storey office with a piended roof projects from a recessed bay to the far left.

Inside, the lodge retains some original chimneypieces and plain plaster cornices. A hall has a chimneypiece, and the scale and platt staircase has turned balusters. Some stained glass is also present. The building is shown on the 1895 Ordnance Survey map.
